‘Hessian’ style officers boots, made by Peal & Co, London. 1860-1870.
The illustration shows one made after 1860 with imitation wrinkles blocked in-something of a joke since they were always made with a rigid leg. At first a tassel dangled from the V cut.
Hessian boots were a fashionable English officer’s boot from 1793 until the end of the 19th century.
The collection contains a wide range of shoes, boots, tools and related objects from the early Medieval period onwards.
